Do you need sleep? Getting to sleep is possible when your mind is able to slow down, be still, and enter into rest. This preparation can be done ahead of time, as you prepare yourself for sleep.
To prepare your mind for rest, think of some of the truths of scripture. For example:
Proverbs 6: 22 reminds you that the godly teachings of your parents will guide you when you walk, keep watch over you when you sleep, and when you awake they will talk to you.
Proverbs 3:24 says that one of the rewards of having sound wisdom and discretion is to be able to lie down, and not be afraid, for when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Ecclesiastes 5:12 shows the contentment of a working man whose sleep is sweet in contrast to the full stomach (greed) of the rich [who hungers for even more], and therefore they will not able to sleep.
So, being able to remember the godly instruction of your parents, to see the benefits of sound wisdom and discretion, and to be content with what you have, will help your mind to calm down, so that you can quickly fall asleep.
God’s promises continue for anyone who is willing to hear and to follow His instruction:
God keeps watch over your steps and your sleep, and He has knowledge of all your ways (Psalm 139:3). Therefore, you can lie down and sleep, for when you awake you will know that the Lord has sustained you. (Psalm 3: 5).
In peace you will be able to lie down and sleep, for the Lord alone will make you dwell in safety (Psalm 4:8). When you awake and look around, you will realize that your sleep has been pleasant to you (Jeremiah 31:26).
So, whether you lie down, or you’re awake, you can know the Lord is with you. You will be strong and courageous, knowing He goes before you, and He is with you; never to leave you, nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:8). Knowing that He is with you will help you to sleep, therefore you can cast all your cares upon Him because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).
So, give all of your struggles over to your Heavenly Father, knowing that He loves you, He promises to take care of you, and you can leave all of your worries behind within His tender hands of mercy.
As you drift off to sleep tonight, take a few moments to say goodnight to your Heavenly Father, and tell Him that you love Him, and you will see Him in the morning. Goodnight!
