I am the true vine, and My Father is the keeper of the vineyard. He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, and every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes to make it even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me.
I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers. Such branches are gathered up, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, proving yourselves to be My disciples. (John 15:1-8)
As believers in Jesus of Nazareth, we probably already recognize what happens when we try to live our lives apart from Jesus. When we go our own way, we quickly realize that we cannot sustain ourselves. We shrivel up and die because there is no life to be found outside of Jesus.
In repentance, we can return to Jesus. We can learn from Him what it means to abide in Him so that His words abide in us. This is His promise that He makes to us, and He is the One who will sustain us by His love, as we learn how to rest, remain, and abide in Him, for apart from Him we can do nothing.
So today, realize your position in Jesus, as you marvel at His grace, are reminded of His mercy, and lavish in His rich love for you. For you, are His precious branch, grafted into the True Vine (Jesus), and your Father takes care of you, as you remain in His Son. From this position, the Holy Spirit can bear much fruit within you for the glory of His name.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, if I love you, then I will obey your commandment to remain in you. Help me to rest assured in you, as my True and Living Vine. Let me take confidence in you as my strength, hope in you as my Redeemer, and lean upon you as I enjoy the depth of your love.
Thank you for helping me to find you as the Way, remain in you as the True Vine, and rejoice in you as my life. May our Heavenly Father be honored, as I find my life in you, allow the Holy Spirit to bear His fruit within me, and declare to the world that I am one of your disciples. Amen.
